Compelling character tells an intriguing story. I was pulled into the narrative within the first few chapters, and hooked within the next few chapters. Finished the last half in one sitting. Unique character voice, slowly-building suspense, great ending. Overall a good read.

The End of Jack Cruz AA Garrison 9780982280935 Books Reviews

New author AA Garrison brings a fresh speculative take to the plague-apocalypse genre with The End of Jack Cruz. First-person narrator Jack (Not Cruz) leads the reader up through the familiar ground mega-virus brings world to its knees, billions perish, cities laid waste. And in the last throes of human civilization, Jack stumbles upon a treatment. It's a brilliant and plausible case of right-place-at-the-right-time, or rather right-kind-of-lifestyle-choices-for-the-end-of-the-world a proper dose of opiate staves off the virus. For a time.

Thence blossom the inevitable conundrums of a world populated only by users that are the particular delights of speculative fiction. If everyone must take drugs to stay alive (sounding familiar yet?), how do you measure sanity? Who should be the one to measure it? How much of society's old laws can you maintain under such a presupposition? Jack Cruz contains all these de-stabilizations within his very large person resourceful and assertive at first, but the reader's doubts grow quickly. Suffice it to say that with great freedom comes great responsibility, and the potential for evil of nearly-lone survivors with the world's resources at their disposal is great. Combine the impending terror of being alone in the world with a psycho with the humor of having the world's last two people both be named Jack, and you have The End of Jack Cruz.

But the best part of The End of Jack Cruz is that Garrison makes it fun to be at the end of the world. Jack the narrator feels like a friend you already know, cutting his tragic tale with jokes peppered with choice cultural references. His clever wordplay and great timing breath life into the post-plague world. Garrison's touches of knowing humor evoke the reader's sympathy for characters that it would be easy to just write off as druggies.

In addition to the engaging read, Garrison provides real thematic meat of a refreshingly down-to-earth breed. The development of narrator Jack as a reader and a writer is an important part of the plot, corresponding closely with his character transformation and giving a context for the creation of the book itself as a fictional artifact. My favorite moments are in Jack's unending free time (so inevitable post-apocalypse) when he takes advantage of having free rein of everything and discovers a true love for civilization-that-was.

It's not often that a humorous book can also be thrilling, but Garrison balances the tones to perfection. It's great to see such quality stories emerging from an independent press. In a world where the sickness and the cure are two sides of the same coin, Garrison leads us through the mirrored hallways of sanity, anarchy, and the all-too-familiar apocalypscape of our own dead civilization a fun, surprising, and exciting debut.
You can read the author's synopsis of this to find out what it is about, I am not here to discuss the story. I am here to share a wonderful new author that I was lucky enough to discover, thanks to a friend.

I am a character driven reader, and this book was right up my alley. With a dark and ever present situation, the author still makes the story all about the people in the book.

One of the main things about this book I enjoyed was the author's occasional flowery tangents in the language. A luxury I think a many larger publishing houses would never allow a new author. When Mr. Garrison (snicker, just realized...) did it, I related to it. I think any person with a creative nature would.
Mr. Garrison's debut novel, The End of Jack Cruz, takes us through the plague-ravaged world of Jack "Colonel" Jones. In an attempt to survive and save himself from dying a horrible death like the majority of mankind, he teams up with Jack Cruz, a formidable man of, at first, only questionable character. The book is written as a first person account of his six months of survival with the man he calls Cruz. Aside from saying Cruz is a bit touched, I'll let you find out about him on your own.

From the very beginning, (and I do mean the first scribbled "I" at the beginning of chapter one) the book wraps you in its world. The tendrils of the tale creep under your skin and hook in and won't let go until you've finished reading...and even then, the narrative lingers.

"Colonel" is a very real character thrust into extraordinary circumstances. He's neither all angel nor all devil, a mixture of both as in life. But I found myself rooting for him and liking him more with each new characteristic he revealed in his observations, comments, and recollections.

The language of the book's prose is lyrical yet quite accessible. I didn't feel as though I were being held at arms length as I often do with first person accounts. It was almost as if I were having a conversation over lunch and being told all the details to make the whole situation seem more real. But let me just say this, I hope no one ever tells me anything like this story over a meal.

Mr. Garrison has penned an exciting, entertaining, and thought-provoking first novel. I look forward to reading more of his work.
It was hard to put the book down as Jack Cruz gave me the creeps but intrigued me to keep reading. The more I read, the more I wanted to see the end of Jack Cruz.
Compelling character tells an intriguing story. I was pulled into the narrative within the first few chapters, and hooked within the next few chapters. Finished the last half in one sitting. Unique character voice, slowly-building suspense, great ending. Overall a good read.
