Are you tired of losing and feeling lost when you play Street Fighter?
Are you sick of getting beat down almost every time you play? Do you struggle against other players that you feel you should be beating? Do you want to step your game up and destroy the competition when Street Fighter 5 drops?
If so, Simplifying Street Fighter is a guide designed for you, the newcomer, to hone your skills in Street Fighter 4 so you can be better prepared for Street Fighter 5. If you're like most players, you struggle with nearly every aspect of the game offense, defense, execution and combos, and generally having a game plan that is more complex than just mashing buttons at every opportunity.
Street Fighter is a series that requires practice, finesse, and knowledge. Unfortunately, most players don't have any guidance on where to begin when learning the game, which leads to lots of frustration and losses. This guide is designed to give you a road map for improving your skills so that when SF5 drops, you can hit the ground running!
Lots of players are under the misconception that since SF5 is a newer game, there's no point in playing SF4 and improving. While it is true that there will be lots to learn in SF5, such as new engines and characters, this is not a reason not to improve on your Street Fighter fundamentals in the meantime.
Like anything else worth doing in life, developing a foundation of solid fundamentals is the key to improving. Even though SF5 will have brand new characters and mechanics, the core elements of Street Fighter remain the same throughout the franchise. Execution, footsies and space control, combos, punishing, and resource management are important in all Street Fighter games and this guide will show you how to use SF4 to improve on these aspects of your game.
Simplifying Street Fighter A New Player Guide to Preparing for Street Fighter 5 (Audible Audio Edition) gootecks Cross Counter TV Books
Simplifying Street Fighter is an absolute necessity if you want to take your level of ability in Street Fighter up several notches immediately. Gootecks quickly breaks down the basics of Street Fighter (including the very fundamental level of what you should or could be playing on as your hardware or connection could be huge limiting factors) and then introduces you to the Ryu gameplan. The ideas of what you should be focusing on are presented very clearly and, especially if you never had any idea beforehand, the strategies of what you should look to see or implement when playing are broken down in a manner that anyone picking up Street Fighter for the very first time can appreciate. From there, Gootecks introduces you to how you should train (using the game's offline training mode), and hand holds you through the entire process.
This brings me to the immense added value that Gootecks has provided throughout and after purchasing this book. He already continuously delivers through his YouTube channel, Cross Counter TV, and, furthermore, provided value through a free audio bonus that will make sure you train efficiently and effectively. It doesn't end there, he has established groups and lines of communication for directly accessing him to ask questions and connect with other aspiring Street Fighter gamers.
Really, to keep things short...If you have any interest in playing Street Fighter to beat anyone (tournaments or your buddies) then you, without question, should pick up this book. Follow through and train as it suggests and you'll thank me, or more appropriately Gootecks, later.

Simplifying Street Fighter A New Player Guide to Preparing for Street Fighter 5 (Audible Audio Edition) gootecks Cross Counter TV Books Reviews
I have to give kudos to Gootecks for sharing the knowledge. Him and Mike Ross always keep us entertained on YouTube's Cross Counter TV show, "The Excellent Adventures of Gootecks and Mike Ross", but spreading the love in the Fighting Game Community is why we show support. Keep it up Gootecks. You knocked this one out of the park!
Very detailed guide to playing Street Fighter 4 on a high level. The fundamental knowledge and training regimes that gootecks provides here are applicable to other fighting games as well. However, where this guide does fall short is in its use of explanations. This guide seems to already assume the player has some base knowledge in fighting games, and some terminology gets used without enough detail for newer fighters to fully understand certain concepts. Some explanations of basics feel rushed, while at other times a lot of background is given for detail that is otherwise not nearly as significant. Definitely worth one's time, however newer fighting game players should have a more experienced friend to help them understand some concepts in this book.
How to practice a fighting game isn't an intuitive thing for a newer player, or in this case, a long-term player who has never been involved with the competitive scene. This book breaks the game down into chunks that can be practiced in order to see definite improvement. It's all about improving your fundamentals, rather than hitting up training mode to try and do the flashiest combo that you can find on youtube and will never be able to use in an actual match.
The writing is crystal clear and highly enjoyable. The only negative I have is that despite being reasonably meaty, I wish there was more. This could easily be a multi-part series (just for Ryu) and then branch off into the other characters. I hope Gootecks continues to write more of this type of content when SFV is released.
A concise and well written introduction into the concepts and thought processes of higher level play. As I practice and get a better grasp on fundamental play, I can come back to this book and still find more to learn time and time again. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get better, or just even just get more enjoyment from an amazing game - these concepts can be applied across the fighting game genre as well.
A great guide that sets new fighting game players on the path to fighting game competency which is a feat in and of itself. I personally don't like watching videos to get information on how to get better at anything much less fighting games and I promote any effort to properly document and organize such knowledge and information. I now have a solid guide I can point my friends to when they decide they want to get into street fighter or when I just want to brush up on the basics, thank you for that Gootecks.
Great reference material if you're new or returning to Street Fighter. I am not particularly a fan of Gootecks, however, I can't disrespect the effort that was put into creating this guide. Invaluable information for all. Those fortunate enough to download the eBook for free they also received a condensed audio version of the book via email by Gootecks himself. I recommend this book as well as Daigo's "Will to Keep Winning" and "Playing to Win" by David Sirlin
I liked this book very much and I've been playing ever 1987 when Street Fighter when came out. I'm now in my mid 30's and still enjoy the franchise. I've played every iteration, sequel and prequel of the game. I played SF4 hard and that is when I started entering local tournaments in Southern Maryland and Baltimore. I know a lot of the stuff in the book already. But it gets me to sit down and think about why I do certain things in game. Certain things in the book has reminded me of strategies that I've forgotten. Basically the book helps new and old players. The writing style is easy to understand and has a casual tone. Gootecks does a great job of not sounding condescending and is a great teacher. Go buy this book.
