BUT the author does not discourage you, she shows you a realistic viewpoint. as we get to know the characters & their quirks you come to really appreciate life in the barracks. Private 101 One Lesbian Army Training LJ Scarborough Books Reviews
I enjoyed this story because it took me to a place, and situations, which I have not, and will never, experience. For those who have been in the service, especially the Army, this will feel very familiar, and I expect, will find it quite enjoyable as well. Last, but not least, for anyone considering volunteering for the Army, I suggest you read this first, as it gives a very good accounting. You may have second thoughts, or wish to jump right in. What transpires, is a detailed account of the main character's (Evelyn) time in basic training, her new friends (including lover Becky “Becks”), the rigors of boot camp, and everything she learns about herself along the way. In addition to an a-hole Sergeant (Sanders), she also meets other women and men who are attempting to do the best they can. There is frustration, loneliness, hope, self-doubt, humor, and pride.
This book describes basic training in the 1980s before man and woman were in the same training class joined by the arny so while it is how it was back then its not like that now. There is no character development the book just describes basic training and mixed in with a few hook ups with her friend. Because this was before dont ask dont tell both of them would have been scared to hook up as many times as they did in this book for fear of getting kicked out so I find this book while realistic on the training the lesbian part is not during training as they would not have risked it.
I read this and thought it was funny and very interesting. I was amazed at all the stuff you had to learn and remember.
I personally would love a sequel.
This is a great story that is informative, fun to read, engaging while being filled with the realities of life; it has wonderful images and lots of humor.
I found myself in tears late in the narration when major realizations came to light. Though I finished this book a while ago many scenes still return to be lingered over. I highly recommend it!
